Exploring the Local Area

Carreg Cennen Castle is one of the area’s most striking landmarks, perched dramatically on a limestone crag just a stone’s throw from Trapp Fishery. First established in the late 13th century, the castle has watched over the valley for more than 700 years, offering a glimpse into Wales’s medieval past along with breathtaking views from its clifftop walls. From the site, guests can also step straight into the wider landscape of the Brecon Beacons National Park, with countless walking routes accessible right from the doorstep. Well‑marked footpaths lead across open countryside towards the nearby Black Mountains, giving walkers of all abilities the chance to explore rolling hills, hidden valleys, and some of the most rewarding scenery in the region.

Several excellent walks start right from the village of Trapp or just a short drive away, giving visitors a real taste of the western Brecon Beacons. One of the most rewarding options is the route to Llyn y Fan Fach and Llyn y Fan Fawr, two dramatic glacial lakes tucked beneath the sweeping ridgeline of the Carmarthen Fans. The walk offers a mix of steady climbs, open moorland, and breathtaking views, with the option to continue along the high ridge for a longer circuit.
